Netflix UK Movie Streaming Deal With Lionsgate Confirmed
Netflix are getting ready to start streaming in the UK in early 2012 by setting up content deals. The latest is an agreement with Lionsgate which brings first-run movies such as Saw 3D and The Mechanic to the streaming only service.
Like many agreements Netflix have sealed, they will not stream movies until one year of their theatrical release. The deal is thought to be a multi-year agreement with Lionsgate UK, bringing new movies along with older titles such as Reservoir Dogs and the Blair Witch Project.
UK viewers will be able to watch Netflix content using pretty much any web connected device, from TV sets, game consoles, smartphones, tablets and computers.
Speaking about the deal, Zygi Kamasa, Lionsgate’s UK chief executive said, “Netflix is the leading worldwide brand in steaming movies and they have an incredible service in North America. We are very excited to be working with them as they launch their service and bring our movies to audiences in the UK and Ireland.”
Netflix are currently on a worldwide expansion. Already streaming in the US and Canada, they embarked on a Latin America expansion back in September. And they now plan to hit Spain and the UK on a European drive.
Netflix will have competition in the UK from Amazon owned Lovefilm, but as the Lionsgate deal is for exclusive streaming rights for several years. It may be one up to Nrtflix.
