When Netflix announced that they will be airing internet only tv shows a few days ago, many may have missed what a significant event this could be for traditional tv. In fact it may well push up the quality threshold for traditional tv shows.

Hollywood starring online only

When Netflix brought the rights (after outbidding HBO and AMC) to drama show House of Cards. starring Kevin Spacey as an ambitious politician and directed by David Fincher, it showed that major tv shows could be delivered online only. It also showed that the potential market for new shows is no longer just the big tv and cable networks.

The show premieres in 2012 on Netflix only and is scheduled for a two season run of one hour length shows, which is just what happens on ‘normal’ tv. No longer is the internet just going to be fulled with 5 or 10 minute clips and webisodes. It could even lead the traditional tv delivery system becoming outdated.

As the Netflix grip tightens on a world filling with Netflix enabled hardware and connected tv sets, the boundries between online and offline content are blurring.

And Netflix are not the only net based player in town. YouTube is also getting involved with content creation and full length features. However nobody has done what Netflix have. Bringing to the web a Hollywood ‘A’ List actor starring in a full-length feature and opening the door to internet companies that know their is a hungry market for the right quality and price.

And hopefully this will make ‘traditional tv’ up its game.
