Netflix Traffic Overtakes Web Surfing In US
Netflix have been hitting the headlines with the amount of bandwidth their viewers use. But a new study by Sandvine Inc. says that 30% of all web traffic in the US is for Netflix streaming of movies and TV shows during peak hours. Beating the paltry 17% which are browsing the web.
The figures show what an amazing growth rate Netflix is having. It now gets around one third of peak traffic to the US and has is now the biggest source of Internet traffic, a rise of around 44% from last year.
Sandvine, a provider of broadband network solutions called the study, Global Internet Phenomena Report: Spring 2011. The expansion of Netflix into Canada, and the expected International rollout will only increase the usage.
For the European market, the report shows that BitTorrent is still the biggest usage of internet traffic during peak time. The figures will make Internet Service providers (ISP’s) worldwide, reconsider the unlimited broadband usage and install a capping system.
Already in Canada, Netflix are lowering bandwidth usage by reducing quality. But that has’nt stopped ISP’s restricting bandwidth for consumers. AT&T have also capped bandwidth along with Comcast. This could be to the detriment of online TV, as streaming will end up costing more.
Sandvine also said that sites such as YouTube and Hulu saw a yearly increase of 60%, using 49.2% of peak traffic, up from 29.5% a year ago.
