After the massive success of its online streaming service, it has come to our attention that Netflix could well be adding a premium service to its ‘Watch Instantly’ online movie and TV show streaming website.

Netflix supply free to its subscribers around 12000 online streaming TV episodes and movies. The problem is that these movies are usually pretty old and hardly the latest blockbusters, however they may soon be streaming premium movies and TV shows from premium channels such as HBO. Netflix have admitted that they are considering the development but it would carry an extra $10 cost to the monthly subscription.

A recent survey sent to a selection of Netflix’s subscribers asked whether they would be interested in the new service of watching premium content on Netflix enabled devices such as Tivo, PC, Roku and Xbox 360. The survey listed some of the movies & shows to be made available and included Rome, The Wire and Flight of the Concords. Movies included Children of Men, I Am Legend, and Jumper.

Netflix are in a difficult position, although they need to move with the times, due to their online streaming service. Rentals of DVD’s are fewer with subscribers who use this service. Cable companies also have to weigh up whether allowing their premium content online will adversely affect their earnings and encourage worldwide piracy.

Whatever way it goes and im thinking that premium content is the way it will go, it can only be good for the consumer.
