Netflix team up with TiVo for high definition online movies

In a move to encourage the marriage of TV hardware with online streaming, Netflix and TiVo have agreed to supply online movie content from Netflix Internet streaming onto TiVo digital video recorders.

netflixtivo Netflix team up with TiVo for high definition online moviesThe service will allow viewers who have TiVo DVR hardware to be able to view movies and television episodes supplied by Netflix’s massive online library of 12,000 titles. This service which will be free to existing subscribers of their DVD rental service.

This deal comes after the similar Samsung and Netflix deal was agreed and combines the two massive brands and massively promotes online movie and tv content from physical disc delivery. TiVo are renowned for making recording and playback of tv content easy also has deals with Amazon and others allowing viewers to easily download content from the Internet.

Meanwhile Netflix who have been offering an online service for streaming movies from the world wide web to pc’s are setting up strategic deals with many hardware companies including LG Electronics and Microsoft bringing its online service straight to the TV set.

TiVo’s chief executive Tom Rogers said:- ‘It’s a way to get Netflix where you’re not watching it on a computer. We know that’s not the optimal way to enjoy movies.’

Previously the two companies had struck a similar deal back in 2004, that agreement however failed due to Netflix being unable to secure the rights to stream the latest movies online.

The TiVo models compatible with this new service includes Series3, TiVo HD and HD XL models.

Whilst Netflix already supply DVD quality movies online, it will also begin offering high definition movies playable on TiVo and other hardware. Viewers will require a pretty good broadband connection for this service.

    Watching movies online has become extremely popular in the last couple of years. One seems to find anything and everything online and so, why should movies be left out.
