Netflix Surpass Viewing Estimates As Yahoo Buyout Rumored
Netflix have had their best period of 2011 in the fourth quarter when viewers of the online streaming service watched over 2 billion hours of movies and TV shows compared to the estimate which was 1.2 billion.
Reed Hastings the Netflix Chief Executive Officer had estimated fourth-quarter streaming would be “well over” 1 billion hours. And analyst for BTIG LLC, Rich Greenfield had figured 1.2 billion hours would be watched in the last three months of 2011.
2012 is expected to be a losing year for Netflix though as Hastings has said that they expect losses in 2012 due to launch costs of the streaming service which is coming to the UK and Ireland.
Netflix could be a good aquisition for Yahoo says Piper Jaffray analyst, Gene Munster. Speaking to CNBC on Wednesday, he said that it could, “make a lot of sense” if Yahoo were to buy the streaming and DVD rental company.
Although it was nowhere near an official announcement, the news sent shares of Netflix up by 11.4% on the same day.
