Over Half Netflix Subscribers Use Streaming Movie Service
Netflix are going from strength to strength, their share price has hit an all time high after a record breaking first quarter. Increasing their subscriber base by 1.7 million new subscribers in the first quarter, giving Netflix a total 14 million subscribers. Their popular instant streaming service was watched by 55% of its subscribers who spent 15 minutes or more watching TV shows and movies online.
Some analysts had predicted problems with the movie studio delaying new releases by 28 days, but Netflix continue to grow with net revenue up 44% to $32.3 million. Netflix say that the over half subscribers who use streaming services is up from 36% last year and 48% for q4 2009.
Netflix are obviously seeing instant-streaming as a big factor for its future growth, and has deals with many manufacturers to embed its streaming services inside of HD TVs, Blu-Ray disc players, set-top boxes and game consoles. Netflix recently announced instant streaming for the Wii. They also struck a coup by being the first streaming service on the iPad touchscreen pc.
Strangely though, even as streaming becomes ever more popular and a substitute for DVD rentals, they are still predicting that they will still be renting DVDs until 2030!
