Netflix Blow Away Competition For Streaming Movies
Netflix have a firm foothold on the streaming movies market, accounting for over 60% of all pay to view digital movies. Market research company, The NDP Group measured the data using their Videowatch Digital tracking service, and found that Netflix were trouncing the competition and being used for streaming or downloaded movies 6 out of every 10 times.
The data was recorded between Jan-Feb 2011 and showed that Netflix had a massive lead from their nearest competitor, Comcast who got 8% followed by a 3 way split for third place from Time Warner Cable (who just launched an iPad app), DirecTV and Apple with 4% each.
To emphasise that the internet is where tv is heading, the report also showed online video was now accounting for around a quarter of all videos watched in your average US home.
A statement from NDP said:- “Sales of DVDs and Blu-ray Discs still drive most home-video revenue, but VOD and other digital options are now beginning to make inroads with consumers.” It also said a major factor was the instant watching aspect of streaming:- “Overwhelmingly digital movie buyers do not believe physical discs are out of fashion, but their digital transactions were motivated by the immediate access and ease of acquisition provided by streaming and downloading digital video files.”
To further enhance their online pay on demand position, Netflix are now producing their own content after declaring themselves a streaming only company.
It seems that a mashup of Netflix and Apple would give the perfect digital movie service as viewers said that Apple had the more recent blockbusters and Netflix were better value and gave a good shopping experience.
