There is obviously money to be made from premium online tv, especially if rumors are correct that Netflix are happy to pay between $70,000-$100,000 for every episode of a show that is still being aired by network tv.

The report in the New York Times says that Netflix who already stream a large catalogue of older titles to subscribers, wants in on the premium up to date shows.

Currently the TV broadcast owners argue that they hold the rights to current tv shows, but Netflix want them for their Watch Instantly service and are said to be in negotiations to achieve this.

If the talks are successful, it could revolutionise watching TV online. vbia Netflix, in fact putting them up against Hulu Plus who stream the latest shows the day after airing. It is even suggested by TV studios that Netflix’s position in tv online is becoming much like Apple in the music world. In fact it’s influence has even convinced rival Apple agreeing to support Netflix.

The news shows that Netflix are seemingly putting everything into streaming tv, after admitting that the rental DVD market is dying. That may not be the case, but viewers are looking for instant access.

Netflix already have the online movies market covered, and if it can get hold of streaming rights for bang up to date tv shows (which at $100,000 per episode would be hard to turn down), then the other streaming companies may as well go home.
