Netflix Roll Out Streaming Movie Service On Wii Console
After trialing the instant streaming disc for Wii, Netflix and Nintendo have now fully launched the internet movie streaming service for Wii console owners. All Wii owners need to start accessing thousands of streaming movies is an existing subscription to Netflix, a broadband connection and a streaming disc for your Wii console.
The deal is great news for Netflix who now have a service running on the biggest selling home console of all time. The Wii console has a bigger user base than any other streaming device that is Netflix streaming movie enabled.
Reggie Fils-Aime. President of Nintendo America said:- “More than 28 million people already use the Wii console to play games, stay fit and have fun. Now they have another reason to use the system every day, to enjoy great movies from Netflix and other video content.”
For Netflix, CEO Reed Hastings said:- “Launching Netflix on the Wii home console marks a significant advance in the evolution of our service. Wii has created immense consumer excitement and has meaningfully altered the consumer electronics landscape. Bringing Netflix to Wii catapults us toward our goal of being ubiquitous on the connected devices most popular with consumers.”
Netflix is agressively expanding and had 12.3 million members at the end of 2009. They are constantly adding new ways for members to watch movies and TV shows streamed straight to the television set. For a cost starting from $8.99 per month, members can instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix and can also receive unlimited DVDs.
To enable their systems to stream TV shows and movies from Netflix, Wii owners will need a broadband Internet connection, a Netflix unlimited membership and a Netflix instant streaming disc for the Wii console. Netflix members and Wii console owners can now receive a free instant streaming disc by visiting www.netflix.com/wii and a disc will be delivered for free.
The only drawback for Wii movie viewers is the lack of any hd option due to its limited resolution. However it does open a new use for the console when your done with all that activity and just want to chill with a movie.

For all of us stuck with no internet except Satellite, which Can’t be used for streaming movies due to bandwidth limits, I wish Netflex would make it obvious that it can’t be used. It’s really disgusting that phone companies and cable providers choose to ignore a large portion of the population – including those that are growing our food – who live in rural areas when it comes to providing internet broadband. The phone company even ran lines down the highway we live only ONE HALF MILE from and messed up our phones twice while they did the upgrades, lied to us and said we would get dsl, and then did NOT provide it down the side roads – so we were lied to, inconvenienced and then didn’t get dsl anyway and we are not even that far in the country! So many things are advertised like they are available to everyone when a large portion of the country can’t have them!
