Netflix Plan European Expansion
Following on from their recent announcement regarding their expansion across the Latin America region, Netflix look to be planning to bring their service to new shores, with reports suggesting that Europe is next on the agenda for the American Internet streaming and movie rental giant.
A report from Variety claims that the service is to begin operation in the United Kingdom early in 2012, although Netflix will have to compete a little harder to gain a foothold in the region due to rival services such as Lovefilm, though the probable increased selection of content for streaming (such as from Netflix’s North American library of movies and shows to add to locally-sourced content) could give them a good start in the market.
Another interesting move being lined up by the company is said to be related to a language which they have already been sourcing content in for their Latin American move.
A selection of film distributors in mainland Europe are claiming that Netflix have informed them of their plans to enter the Spanish market, also penciled in for a 2012 start date, with Pedro Perez, head of Spain’s ’Federation of Audiovisual Producer Associations’ (FAPAE) suggesting that the move will be completed in January. The expansion into Spain could be considered as a relatively seamless one for the company, as Spanish-language content on Netflix is set to be produced and sourced as part of their most recent service roll-out across the Americas.
The move into the British Isles will have a similar ease of transition due to English being the native language of most Netflix content (in USA and Canada), but how long will it be before the company take a bolder step into the rest of Europe (e.g. Germany and Italy), and indeed other continents?
