Nintendo 3DS owners can give their games a rest and watch some Netflix streaming instead, as the Netflix app has been released in the eShop for US and Canada users. The app lets subscribers stream unlimited movies and TV shows to their 3D gadgets and as a bonus, even to their Wii systems as well.

The 3DS has two seperate screens so standard streaming will be displayed on the top screen of the 3DS and controls on the bottom screen. But excitingly there will be a selection of 3D movies, which can be seen without the need for funny specs coming in the future.

Netflix claims to already have more than 1.5 million members using the service on their Wii consoles. The content which can be streamed from the app includes action films, award-winning documentaries, reality shows as well as sitcoms.

Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Aime said, “The new Netflix application looks great, plays great and is a fantastic consumer experience. It gives Nintendo 3DS owners access to an amazing wealth of movies and TV shows, which they can watch conveniently from thousands of free Wi-Fi access points across the country. Nintendo 3DS truly offers something for everyone.”

Speaking for Netflix, Reed Hastings CEO said, “Nintendo is a terrific partner with Netflix. We’re excited to extend the partnership to include streaming on Nintendo 3DS.”

The app needs a free system update installed which can be downloaded from the eShop. Users in the US and Canada will need a Netflix subscription to watch 3DS streaming, currently priced from $7.99 monthly.
