Netflix Lionsgate Deal Ready For UK Launch?
Netflix are thought to be edging ever closer to a presence in the UK following a new deal being signed with Hollywood production company and content distributor Lionsgate.
The movie rental and online streaming giant already has an American deal with Lionsgate to host episodes of hit series Mad Men, but it seems as though Netflix are looking for a ‘multiyear deal’, and would claim that taking such a contract to include overseas expansion would benefit all parties.
The link to a new UK service would come through Lionsgate’s official UK division, and could provide a key leg up into a high-potential new market for the American company. Such an arrangement would see a new ‘Netflix UK’ be given access to selected Lionsgate movies and series, in a bid to rival established pay-TV competitors such as Sky and Virgin Media.
Netflix will be attempting to use this move as a means of promoting their upcoming expansion into Europe, following on from a previous move to Canada, and ‘in-progress’ plans to have a presence in the rest of North America and South America being lined up for later in the year. With moves to the UK and Spanish markets being prepared for 2012, it could be seen as the the start of an online streaming juggernaut, which company CEO Reed Hastings has expressed his desire to keep running at a rate of two ‘markets’ a year starting from 2012. If that is the case, then which countries or regions will they be eying up for 2013?
