Netflix Kills Off Qwikster
In a move straight from a comedy movie, Netflix have ditched the Qwikster DVD rental website that it launched literally weeks ago. Netflix revealed the switch-back in a blog post that basically said that Netflix members could not navigate two websites, they said, “It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs.”
A strange reason indeed, although Netflix members would have two queues for DVD rental with Qwikster and streaming via Netflix, that surely could have been reduced to a single queue if Netflix wanted to. The simple fact of the matter is that maybe splitting into two websites was a mistake in the first place.
The whole sorry affair started for Netflix when they made two very unpopular changes. First they upped their prices substantially, then they split the DVD and streaming businesses into two seperate operations.
There followed a swift apology from Netflix CEO, Reed Hastings for the whole sorry affair. But he then announced the major overhaul that would seperate the streaming and DVD services into two seperate businesses with Netflix being used exclusively for streaming and Qwikster for DVD by mail rental services.
So it all ended on Monday when Hastings admitted in a blog post that Netflix had messed up, he said, “It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs. This means no change: one website, one account, one password, in other words, no Qwikster.”
So users visiting the new Qwikster website are simply redirected to Netflix.com and the idea is hopefully consigned to the history books. But it sure is making Netflix look bad, but can they recover?
