Netflix First Ipad App To Offer On Demand Movies And TV Shows
Everyone wants in on the iPad launch, including Netflix who have released an application that lets users stream movies and TV shows on the Apple touch pc. Released on Thursday, the free app has become the second most popular free program from the iTunes store, and the iPad still hasnt been released. Of course it may be free to download, but watching anything will cost you.
Getting the jump on rivals again, the new app completes part of an ongoing strategy by Netflix to stream premium content onto a range of internet connected products, that let viewers watch tv and movies anywhere they happen to be.
Strangely, the normally very restrictive Apple approved Netflix’s app even though it is in competition with the iTunes store, where viewers can purchase tv shows for around $1.99-$2.99. In a bid to boost sales, Apple have been pushing content providers to drop the price of a tv episode to $1.
Netflix also got a jump on Hulu, the popular video site that has brought online TV viewing to the masses. Hulu is rumored to be working on an iPad app but hasn’t confirmed its plans. Its videos are free now, but Hulu is under pressure from the networks and TV studios to switch to a subscription model.
If as expected, the new app is a success, then it further hurts main rival, Blockbuster. Last month, the company beat Netflix by offering mobile movie streaming, offering on-demand video on TMobile’s HD2 smart phone. It is said to be working on similar apps for Android and Windows Mobile phones.
However, that may not be enough to save Blockbuster, who have warned that they are running out of cash and may file for bankruptcy. A spokesman for Netflix wouldn’t disclose how many times its app had been downloaded. The app is free, but monthly Netflix subscriptions start at $8.99 per month.
