Streaming movies from Netflix on the Wii console came a step closer today, Netflix have announced instant streaming discs are currently being tested. “Their feedback will ensure that we deliver a great experience to everyone when we launch,” said Netflix spokesperson Jessie Becker on the Netflix Blog.

All Wii users with a broadband connection can now subscribe from $9 per month, plugin their instant-streaming disc ( free disc available from the Netflix site ) and watch the Netflix library consisting of thousands of tv shows and movies using web streaming.

The only downside is that Wii cannot display hd streams due to limitations in its hardware. The Wii console may be a premiere games machine, is a standard def machine of 480p. In comparison, rival consoles like Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation run at 720p or 1080p. Watching Netflix on the Xbox 360 is also easier as its integrated into the dashboard, PS3 users have to also use an instant streaming disc until they update the PS3 system software later this year.

But even with the drawbacks, at least Wii owners now have access to streaming movies after they have had enough of waving their arms around, and although a little inconvenient, the Netflix disc is better than nothing.
