Netflix Down As Hackers Target Big Names

Popular online video provider Netflix have reportedly been the victim of a hack by an anonymous group of cybercriminals, following news that the website was briefly offline on Sunday.

The error occured at approximately 8:30 US Eastern Time, with the Netflix homepage displaying this statement to its users: “We are sorry, the Netflix website and the ability to instantly watch movies are both temporarily unavailable. Our engineers are working hard to bring the site and ability to watch instantly back up as soon as possible. We appreciate your patience and, again we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

The restored was complete about four hours later, though, and users were allowed back onto the site and to login, though that short period was enough to prompt a tirade of complains on Twitter and conspiracy theories of a ‘cyber attack’ becoming ripe.

One such comment on the social networking site regarding Netflix stated with a bit of affection: “I can’t access Netflix. I’m not… I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do now? Panic is setting in.”

While the alleged hacking is not on the scale of the issues faced by Sony’s video gaming outlet PlayStation Network, it seems as though Netflix is the latest in a line of big-name companies and organisations to have their security breached, with IMF, Citibank, and PBS also hacked anonymously in the recent past for various reasons.

This also follows reports that video game producers Sega had their website crashed last week, with up to 1.3 million customers potentially having their login details to the Sega website stolen.

With hacks on popular websites seemingly now all the rage, will high-profile companies now be on their toes to counter these kinds of attacks, or will the giant targets around the world prove to be too irresistable for the hackers?

  1. [...] vod service. It was reported that over one thousand titles were added. Netflix had a scare when hackers shut down the site. It seems companies are prepares for cyber attacks though, as it was soon business as [...]

  2. Netflix needs better people working for them. Engineers? lol my guess is the so called “Engineers” took online education. Im a server admin and it dosent take this long to get a data center running. Obviously they have no redundancy with there network, hence amateur engineers. Netflix if you are looking for real system admins give me a call!

  3. Uh, what do they mean fixed? Nothing is fixed, no one is able watch anything via Roku, AppleTV or the iOS mobile app. Props to Netflix for removing the damned notice early. Way to hide the facts.
