Does Netflix Have A Content Problem?

You may have noticed a flurry of activity from Netflix recently, buying up content for their streaming watch instantly service. But why the rush? After all Netflix are the most forward thinking (and most popular) subscription online video supplier, for now.

Streamings great, but wheres the new stuff?

In the last couple of months Netflix have signed content deals with CBS, added content from ABC Disney and generally been busy buying any content they can get their mitts on.

You see the problem with Netflix is they currently have a pretty limited streaming range. Their DVD by mail service currently has around 90,000 titles to choose from. Now compare that to the streaming service which has around 12,000 titles. You will not find any latest movies and no older tv show seasons. In fact a lot of the content is kind of old and tired.

Although current customers are still working their way through the content and are happy to watch on a number of devices and phones etc. What will the $7.99 per month subscribers think when the good stuff has been streamed? Will they continue paying?

The current issue is that getting hold of that premium movie and tv content is too expensive, or it’s just not available yet as studios and networks weigh up the costs and rewards of streaming their titles. Competition is hotting up from all angles. Not only do they have the new problem of Amazon entering the streaming market, but Apple and Hulu Plus as well. Red Box are also looking to start instant streaming as well.

The thing is that many of the older titles that can be streamed are not on exclusive deals, so any streaming supplier can buy the rights. The Amazon Prime service not only includes unlimited free streaming of 5000 titles, but many of the titles are the same ones that Netflix supply.

They still have DVD by mail though, right? Well wrong actually because that market is declining, DVD is on the way out. That’s the reason Netflix have rebranded as a streaming digital tv service and not a physical one.

As so many players are coming into the streaming market, will Netflix be able to get (or afford) the new premium content? It will presumably be offered around to the highest bidder, and that bidder may not be Netflix. The move from physical DVD to digital looked a pretty straightforward move, but maybe Netflix have not been quick enough to secure deals. Only time will tell of course, and for the customer more competition should (hopefully) create a better deal.

  1. I don’t think that Netflix has anything to worry about. They are soon to be the common factor in every American home! I have been a long time employee of DISH, and one thing I can tell you is that people love movies! With the new Google TV having Netflix app already loaded, it makes it that much easier to use! I had my computer connected to my TV before and I know I am not the only one whose computer just for some reason freeze up and lose the feed. Save yourself some troubles and check out the Logitech Revue with Google TV. Makes life easier!

  2. [...] At the Deutsche Bank Securities Media & Telecom conference in Palm Beach, Fla., the cable networks have been playing down the Netflix threat. Comcast Cable President Neil Smit said that the company can compete with Netflix as a digital movie provider, and has said they will compete by offering new content rather than the older catalog of streams that Netflix supply. 3. I’m cancelling my subscription until they get some more instant watch movies. I don’t watch a lot but that’s probably because there’s never anything of any interest. Movies I want to watch multiple times quickly lose their instant watch status.

  6. Does Netflix have a content problem”? No, not for the price of the plan. For 8 bucks a month I get plenty of content that I enjoy. Nobody ever said netflix was offering a way to get around cable TV completely but what they do have to offer will be more than you would expect for the price. Now if you combined Netflix and Hulu plus and something like Zune you will really start to question why your paying your cable bill every month. I have found tons of TV shows that I missed on cable and have enjoyed hundreds of hours of them on netflix now. Sure they have a lot of utter garbage available to stream but there is plenty of diversity and stuff for everyone. I tend to watch alot of Documentary’s and TV shows on Netflix instant stream and I would say they have and excellent selection of them. And lets not forget about the Starz play where they have everything current and old from starz. I got my moneys worth when I streamed a bunch of Starz play stuff.

  7. They have a huge problem as their inventory is terrible. I am terminating my membership with them.

  8. I had Netflix Canada for 6 months. 99% of the movies I wanted to watch were “Unavailable”. Tried to watch the original Woodstock movie-unavailable. No Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. No “Bad Boys” with Sean Penn. There were plenty of second rate British documentaries though. I’ll stick with cable tv until Netflix gets movies that I actually want to watch. If you like to watch 3rd rate movies, then $7.99/month ain’t bad.
