Netflix Clamp Down On Multi Streaming
Netflix seem to have entered an unpopularity contest and are going all out to win it! After an unpopular price rise which has just kicked in, the loss of major content partner Starz, they have now enforced a limit on subscribers of streaming just one piece of content at a time.
The move may not be a big deal if your a single netflix subscriber living alone, but couples and families who used to share the account and stream different content at once, the door has been slammed shut.
Netflix content can be streamed on a number of connected devices such as iPad, consoles, smartphones and computers. It meant that account holders could stream content on one device while a family member watch something else on another, but all from the same IP address of course.
Although it has been pointed out that it was always in their terms that a single stream at a time was watched, it seems that Netflix are only now enforcing the rule. Previously several streams could be opened up at one time. Subscribers who try to stream more than a single movie now get blocked and a message informs you to stop being naughty.
It appears that the move is due to the new subscription packages, if users go for the single DVD disc rental they get a single stream, for 2 discs they get 2 concurrent streams etc. But with each additional stream/disc costing an extra $7.99, it may not go down too well with users who are just getting over the price rise.
Netflix may be making big profits, but with the number of unpopular moves and in light of growing competition from other streaming services, things may go south pretty soon.
