Netflix 60% Subscription Rise Causes Outrage Amongst Subscribers

Streaming fans that also love DVD rental have been hit by a Netflix increase that effectively hikes the monthly price by 60%. Netflix have ditched the $9.99 monthly subscription and introduced unlimited DVD rental or unlimited streaming into for $7.99 each, or $15.98 for the two.

Netflix is going to cost you

Amazingly Netflix have not catered for fans that still want both options and are hoping to get a discount for signing up to both. The choice is one or the other, or both for double the price. Needless to say, subscribers are not too impressed with the move.

There have been a barrage of angry posts and threats to leave the service on social network sites, such as Twitter, Facebook and the Netflix blog. Netflix are blaming  the high costs of handling and sending DVDs on the rise, but they are also busy pushing streaming services as their core business.

The NYT quotes Arash Amel, a research director for IHS Screen Digest saying that further changes to Netflix’s monthly prices should be expected in the next couple of years as the company’s growth rate slows and as it pays hundreds of millions of dollars more to license streams of movies and TV shows.

It is not the first time Netflix have angered users, just last month they were heavily criticised after launching a new user-unfriendly interface. This move also was followed by a mass of negative comments.

For users that only want to watch streaming, there will actually be a price reduction that brings it in line with Hulu Plus costs. But it seems Netflix has to keep buying up more content and needs a way to pay for it. So get used to higher monthly payments guys.
