MTV seem to be intent on expanding on their ‘Shore’ series of reality shows, as tabloid reports have revealed that the international music and entertainment network have commissioned a second version of the format to take place in England.

In what will probably be seen as a spin-off of new hit series Geordie Shore, Mersey Shore will take the MTV party to Liverpool for another location-based series of partying and drama in a coastal city. It was a fairly fast move to make from producers seeing as the first series of Geordie Shore is not even finished (having started little over a month ago), which itself is a spin-off from the surprisingly popular US show Jersey Shore.

The producers seem to have been encouraged by the highest ratings that MTV UK has ever had (a weekly average of over 330,000 so far), and had previously revealed that they are on board for filming a Geordie Shore ‘summer special’ from the holiday resort of Magaluf (Spain), as well as a ‘reunion show’ later in the year, with a second series probably also in the pipeline, as the Newcastle-based series hopes to emulate its American sibling, which has just been commissioned for a fifth season.

Casting is said to have already begun for Mersey Shore, with aims to find a cast that is as ‘equally explosive’ as their predecessors. The search seems to be partly for real Z-list celebrities and hopeful groupies, as names in the fray are said to include Anthony Hannah (member of the short-lived X Factor boyband Eton Road), actress Candy McCulloch (formerly on soap opera Hollyoaks), and Natalie and Stephen Rooney (cousins of English football (soccer) player Wayne Rooney), all of whom have reportedly been approached for auditions.

An MTV insider said of the plans: “Scousers are always up for a drink and a night on the tiles. We think Mersey Shore will be just as explosive as Jersey and Geordie Shores.”

While locals of Liverpool (nicknamed ‘Scousers’) are probably now preparing to defend their stereotypical reputation like past regional victims of ‘reality shows’ gone by, MTV will be planning their way towards what they believe to be another potential ratings hit. A small warning for American viewers if both of the English ’Shores’ make it on air across the Atlantic, though – Scousers have an unique accent that is just as strong as the Geordies!
