MTV To Launch Geordie Shore Show From The Toon

Inspired by the success of US reality show Jersey Shore, MTV have confirmed the details of an official English take on the format, with the channel getting ready to air their new series, Geordie Shore next month. The series will officially premiere on MTV UK on 24 May in the 10pm timeslot.

MTV have reportedly been interested in a British version of the ‘reality’ format for a while now, and seem to have chosen the city of Newcastle (located in the north-east of England) as the ideal setting, with a ’5-star house’ for the cast to live in by day as they party at night. The channel have described their new show, which is currently being filmed, as ‘six weeks [episodes] of unadulterated partying Toon-style’.

The show will be walking in against some more established competition, though, as Jersey Shore already has somewhat of a following on MTV (and its feeder channels) in the UK, while ITV2 series The Only Way Is Essex has been a surprising ratings winner.

The formats do not seem to go down too well with locals, though, as both of the above shows have had the effect of providing unwanted stereotypes to the general population of New Jersey and Essex, respectively. Despite this, however, with Newcastle already producing nationally-known celebrities such as Cheryl Cole (singer), and Ant & Dec (TV presenters), it will not be too much of a leap to see stereotypical Geordie accents being mimicked by fans.

The 8-strong cast of Geordie Shore(currently only known by their first names (Jay, Charlotte, Gary, Greg, Holly, James, Sophie, Vicky)), who have already released a Jersey Shore-style promo video (which can be seen at the bottom of this post), have wasted no time in trying to impose their probable celebrity status, by giving themselves nicknames and TV personalities to rival their US counterparts, who are currently filming a new season in Italy.

Characters include one that has dubbed himself ‘The Solution’ (a response to Jersey Shore’s ‘The Situation’), another that believes he should ‘have a degree in partying’, and one that feels she can ‘talk the back legs off a donkey’, amongst the more family-friendly boasts.

With the cast and dates set up, is the show going to spawn a new wave of celebrity tabloid favourites in the UK press? The Only Way Is Essex cast member Sam Faiers seems to think so, but is not worried at the new threat. She said: “I think, like any show, that I hope it goes well for them, but no one’s going to beat the Essex. You can’t beat the Essex crowd – good luck Geordie Shore!”

Can the Geordies put up another ‘reality’ show for the masses, or has the strange craze for this format run its course?
