Mobile Live TV Predicted To Achieve Big Gains In 2011

Mobile live tv to take off in 2011

Watching live tv on a mobile phone or device is expected to boom next year after it was announced that over 10 broadcasters are planning mobile tv services that will reach around 40% of US phone users.

A press release by Mobile Content Venture details the plans, with the launch of 2 free tv channels that will be funded by advertising. The consortium consists of 12 broadcasters, who are Fox, NBC, Belo, Cox Media, E.W. Scripps, Gannett Broadcasting, Hearst Television, ION Television, Media General, Meredith, Post-Newsweek Stations and Raycom Media.

To begin with, the broadcasters will need to upgrade their stations to deliver ATSC Mobile DTV signals to portable devices.

The tv industry have been toying with mobile tv for some time, but the only real live tv project of note has been the FLO TV system with a small number of channels airing. It is still a limited system. And Flo TV will soon be no more after Qualcomm Inc. decided to shut it down.

John Taylor of LG Electronics, who have assisted in the development of mobile DTV said:- “I wouldn’t say we’re at the tipping point. But with the impending ramp-up of widespread availability of mobile DTV signals around the country, we anticipate that manufacturers will gear up their plans to introduce more products.”

Launch of the DTV transmissions are expected in several metropolitan US cities including LA, New York and Los Angeles. The problem with live tv will be the need for a tv tuner and an antenna, so to receive any signals will require a hardware upgrade. That may not be a problem with phone users regulalry updated their handsets.

So what will people be watching on live mobile tv? Local tv is expected to be popular with people on the go, as well as sports events and catching up with missed tv shows. It is expected that other portable mobile hardware will gain the tuner, including tablets,  netbooks and portable DVD players. LG are expected to reveal a prototype smart phone at the CES with a 4 inch screen and an antenna designed to receive mobile DTV transmissions.

In these days of ever shrinking hardware, i cannot see mobile live tv taking off with hip and trendy people until the antenna gets built into the device though.
