Facebook are not exactly renowned for movie streaming, yet. But that may soon change as Miramax Films are offering a streaming rental service on Facebook for twenty movies that include old favs Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Sin City and Swingers.
A page on Facebook called the Miramax eXperience offers the movie selection for a rental cost of $3 or 30 Facebook credits, and for viewers in the UK the cost will be £1.80 per movie. For UK viewers it marks the first time Facebook has offered streaming movies.
The move marks the Facebook’s slow move into movie rentals, started with Warner Bros. The Dark Knight movie in March, and followed with a bigger selection including the first two Harry Potter movies and dream-based hit Inception amongst others. Universal Pictures have available, The Big Lebowski.
The Miramax eXperience also offers something the other studios don’t though, as this deal allows streaming on the iPad and Google TV as well. The current inability of Facebook movies to be watched on a TV or connected device is seen by many as holding them back.
The deal marks the latest in Miramax’s efforts to get content online from it’s library of around 700 titles. Deals currently exist with big hitters such as Netflix and Hulu. Facebook recorded 51.4m unique video users in July.
