Massive growth shows USA is loving Online TV
Online TV viewing in the home of Hollywood and the largest consumer market in the world, the United States of America has more than doubled within 2 years. Almost a fifth of homes are watching broadcasts on the internet according to a new survey.
The survey was conducted by the US Conference Board and TNS which surveyed 10,000 American homes. The report showed that the most popular online tv websites visited were massive video site youtube and network tv websites.
The massive rise is largely due to the flexible viewing times available with online tv allowing viewers to choose when they watch the latest hit tv shows. The survey showed that over 70% watch internet tv sites daily and mainly for entertainment purposes.
“Most consumers are pressed for time and require flexibility in their daily schedules and TV viewing habits,” said Lynn Franco, Director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center. “Being able to watch broadcasts on their own time and at their convenience are clearly reasons why we are seeing a greater number turning to the Internet. And, it is the reason why we would expect to see this trend continue.”
Most popular shows viewed online are news, drama, comedy shows, reality shows and sports. Youtube user created videos followed a close second behind the shows. Also popular were trailers and previews, extra content from hit shows and soaps.
Viewing habits included nine out of 10 watching online tv at home. About 15 percent say they watch in the office, and 6 percent watch TV online from other locations, including the library or a friend’s home.
“The shift from appointment TV to content on demand is well underway,” said Michael Saxon, Senior Vice President of TNS Brand and Communications. “Fundamentally, consumers expect content to be available when they want it, and on the screen of their choice TV,PC, or mobile. For consumers, PCs enhance content on demand from simply time-shifting to place-shifting. Online content can be viewed in any room in the house, or at work or school.”
Most popular for viewing online tv was instant streaming video by 68 percent of online TV viewers. Downloading videos was used by 38 percent of viewers. Most popular destinations for online tv viewers are the official TV channel/networks website home page viewed by 65 percent of viewers, and YouTube watched by 41 percent of viewers. Pay services however proved unpopular.
