Amazon-owned European online streaming service LoveFilm have revealed a key step forward for their technological offerings, after finally announcing the introduction of HD-quality streaming to their TV and movie rentals.
Available to members of LoveFilm Instant, the new streaming resolution available on the service will be in up to 1080p HD quality for select shows and movies, with no extra charge for the subscriber. This 1080p picture quality will currently be available for desktop (PC & Mac) users only, with the integrated LoveFilm services on Xbox 360 and smart TV’s (LG and Samsung) will go as far as 720p, with the company reminding potential users that they will need respective internet connection speeds of 4mbp/s and 12mbp/s for the service to work as intended.
Movies and TV shows set to be offered to customers in the UK market include Gnomeo & Juliet, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Ghost Whisperer, Lost, and BBC documentary Human Planet, amongst others, with LoveFilm claiming that they will add more titles to the collection in the near future. Coincidently, Lovefilm have just announced that more movies will be available after securing a movie deal with NBC Universal.
Jim Buckle, managing director of LoveFilm, said of their progress: “LoveFilm is the number one consumer choice for subscription film and TV series streaming in Europe. The introduction of HD quality content further strengthens the offering and marks another key milestone in delivering our members the best possible service with exceptional value.”
Claiming that HD will help to ‘strengthen’ their offering to subscribers, will the integration of HD-quality streaming be a boost to their prospects of bringing in customers, or is it a feature that many people would just expect now as opposed to being excited about?
