LoveFilm are having a busy day. First they have extended their digital content deal with the BBC agreed last year, bringing more shows to the streaming service, plus they have extended HD support.
The deal further strengthens Lovefilm’s tie with the UK TV networks, after early 2012 when the Amazon-owned service inked deals with both ITV and BBC Worldwide. Lovefilm also added BBC content to their German service in April 2012.
The extended deal means that subscribers can watch more BBC shows on-demand this year including the UK version of The Office, as well as Extras, Top Gear, Primeval, Jonathan Creek, and Guinness Book of World Records. Also available is season 1 of Luther can be watched online just in time for season 2.
Speaking about the deal, Loefilm MD Jim Buckle, said,“The evolution of our TV offering has been unstoppable over the past year. We kicked off 2012 by announcing a new deal with BBC Worldwide and it is great to see-in 2013 by adding to that agreement. We’ve got some of the best British TV content ever made, and we’re first choice for TV fans who want good quality shows, instantly.”
For the BBC, Head of UK, Lisa Rousseau for BBC Worldwide, said, “Our content partnership with LOVEFiLM continues to evolve year on year. This new deal will see more gripping award-winning dramas and landmark documentaries added to the service bringing some of the very best in UK television to LOVEFiLM’S subscribers.”
LoveFilm instant are ramping up the quantity of content as they battle in the UK with rival Netflix. They secured a deal with Disney for ABC TV shows last year, and recently brought in content from Channel 4’s online portal 4oD.
If that was not enough to get streaming fans excited, Lovefilm also revealed they are adding HD content to Bravia Smart TV sets and Sony Blu-Ray players in the UK and Germany.
