Logitech Revue Google TV Box Gets Blocked By Hulu

Revue Google TV box but no Hulu

After the fanfare starts dying down over the Logitech Revue Google TV Box launch event, Google acknowledged that Hulu is blocked from running on the device.

Google TV being unable to run Hulu, the top internet TV site showing content from NBC Universal, Fox and Disney is not a big surprise as Hulu currently blocks Android phones as well.

There was a way around the problem, by setting the Android browser to identify itself as a desktop computer, but this was soon blocked also.

The new Google TV hardware was revealed by Logitech at a New York press conference yesterday, the Revue set-top box will retail for $299 and bring full internet browsing and streaming tv channels and apps to the US market at the end of October.

Hulu have a history of blocking unauthorized hardware from streaming their content, Hulu blocked the Boxee streaming box last year. Mobile access to tv streaming was something that Hulu’s content owners did not want to provide. Now it is clear that they are also anti-television access as well, unless you are a subscriber to Hulu Plus for which Google is said to be in discussions with Hulu about.

Obviously, this is no fault of Google or Logitech. Google TV would probably love to run the Hulu service if allowed. This is not the full Web, and the blocking of Hulu sets a disturbing precedent for set-top boxes. It relegates televisions to a different version of the Web than the one your computer on the coffee table is getting.

The worry will be that if content providers can tell that a set-top boxe is running the streams, then they can turn off the streams at will. There may be a way to hack the software so that the hardware appears to be a standard pc. But who wants to start hacking into their tv hardware?

FYI concerning price….DISH sells the Revue for $179.
