Legend3D Plan Take Off With Top Gun Re-Release

How great would it be to convert your favorite old movies into 3D? Well stop wishing. The global catalogue of 3D movies might just see a rapid expansion in the near future, as production company Legend3D have revealed plans to re-release 1986 hit Top Gun in a 3D format. Potentially starting a trend towards giving ‘a new dimension’ to all-time classics.

The cult film, which was directed by Tony Scott, and featured Tom Cruise as a reckless fighter pilot, is currently discussing a potential cinematic re-release, scheduled for the first half of 2012.

The CEO of Legend3D, Rob Hummel, said of the potential deal, and how the movie (along with possible future targets) could work in the format: “As I understand it, they are planning to release it in 3D in early 2012, though I know they want to get Tony Scott’s approval before they go forward. I think Top Gun lends itself to 3D due to the aerial flight. You can have fun with 3D by bringing things off the screen if they are not attached to the edge of the screen. We think there is great potential for catalogue titles in 3D, but studios have had trouble justifying the expense.”

As a demonstration of how original movies can be re-formatted into 3D, the studio revealed a four-minute-long 3D preview of Top Gun‘s opening sequence to an audience at the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam (Holland).

Hummel had recently claimed that Legend3D have arranged a revenue-sharing deal with Paramount Pictures (distributor of Top Gun), and the arrangement that sees his company picking up the bill for the expensive conversion process involved for the 3D re-release.

Original director Scott has previously claimed that a sequel or re-make of the action classic is being planned (either with or without headline star Tom Cruise, according to contradicting reports), so any new Top Gun would probably at least be filmed in 3D from the start now that the technology is there. While fans who recently purchased an upscaled ‘Blu-ray special edition’ of the film (to celebrate its 25th anniversary) may have to pay out again next year for the latest developments, how many more old titles are going to receive the ’3D re-release’ treatment in the near future?
