Kiefer Sutherland Premiers Online-Only Drama
24 star Kiefer Sutherland has been developing a new project recently, and the fruits of his labor are now being seen online… only.
Hulu this week released the first-ever episode of The Confession which will consist of 10 six-minute ‘w
ebisodes’, that feature the Canadian star as a hitman, who has conversations with a local priest (being played by John Hurt (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows)) over why his victims deserved their fate, with the discussions turning to theological blows between the man and his religion.
The series is said to feature good production values for what is a web-only ‘miniseries’, and the main character portrayed by Sutherland said to be in line with his role as his famed no-nonsense anti-terrorist agent Jack Bauer. The first episode begins with the character entering a Catholic chruch’s confession booth stating the line ‘bless me father for I have sinned exceedingly….’, which could be hinting at a running theme for the series, as well as ‘flashbacks’ which supplement the character’s discussions on what happened to the victims and why.
For Sutherland, it will be another ‘action man’ role after his stints on 24 (which is currently filming an official movie to end the popular franchise), and notable roles in recent years including The Sentinel, Twelve, and voice acting roles on family animation Monsters vs. Aliens, and also on the World War II video game Call of Duty: World at War. It is the latest installment of a distinguished career which had seen his early days tarnished by his reputation as a hellraiser.
He will hope that he never ends up going the same way as one of his closest friends from the Bratpack group, and current troubled star who has probably regained that tag by now, (former) Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen. He recently said of Sheen’s situation: “I know Charlie as a really funny, talented, loyal, fiercely loyal guy, and clearly people are concerned about him and worried about him. He’s one of those cats that always seems to land on his feet, and I wish him the best. I care a lot about him, and obviously like a lot of people, you get worried.”
The Confession, meanwhile, could be a continuation of a recent trend of shows being produced in-house, or exclusively for online ‘networks’ such as Hulu, in an effort to make more money and brand recognition beyond online streaming services. Netflix were recently seen entering this game, but will exclusive online series soon become a market phenomenon?
