Katie, the syndicated ABC daytime talkshow fronted by journalist Katie Couric, has been confirmed as receiving an extension onto a second season.
The news announced yesterday (30 January) confirmed that the series, which was premiered in September and outperformed rival programming from Trisha Goddard and Ricki Lake (amongst others) with an estimated 2.5m average viewers, will remain with its ‘existing stations’ for another year.
The confirmation comes less than a week after the show hit the headlines due to the exclusive interview she had with college american football player Manti Te’o, finding out more about his story as a victim in a ‘catfishing’ scandal, which amongst other results led to an auto-tuned song of the episode released online.
Janice Marinelli, the president of Disney-ABC Domestic Television, noted of the decision: “Katie is the number one new syndicated talk show of the 2012-2013 season and we are thrilled to announce a green light for season two. Katie is an immensely talented host who has an incomparable ability to connect with her viewers. We also have outstanding station partners and time periods and look forward to continued success with Katie this year and into season two.”
The presenter added of her feelings towards the renewal: “Hosting, producing and launching a show from scratch has been challenging but very rewarding. I’m looking forward to working with our terrific team to build on the success of our first season and continuing to share compelling stories, explore important topics, and create entertaining television for our audience.”
The confirmation of a second season is undoubtedly good news for Katie Couric, but if for whatever reason her show does not perform as well on her return, she can rest easily in the knowledge that she still has a budding singing career as her fall-back option:
