Joost gets a boost with Flash video integration

The well know Internet television site from Joost the creators of Skype, has received a technical makeover after the initial buzz around its launch a year ago died down.

joostJoost.com, which is pronounced as ‘juice’ in English, now has a video platform based on the Flash video software, the most popular program for viewing video on the internet.

Joost which has a massive library of online video programming, including news, sports, music videos, TV shows and movies from its partners like CBS, Sony Pictures, Viacom, Warner Bros. and others.

However, it was lagging behind rival video sites like YouTube.com and Hulu.com, a joint venture between News Corp. and NBC Universal, since its official opening in October 2007, in large part because users must download software before viewing.

Joost CEO Mike Volpi, in a posting on the blog of the company, said the switch to Flash, which came into force on Tuesday, was a recognition of the need “to make changes if our users, trends or the data suggest a new direction. “

“Now you can get a video directly into the Web browser,” he wrote. “You get the video in great quality you expect, but you do not have to start a separate program that enables viewing of Joost.”

Besides the shift to flash, Joost, on Tuesday released a series of new tools in an attempt, a social network around the Internet.

The new features allow users to interact with video and with others on the site, for example, to express their opinions through comments or find out what their friends are.

“Our integrated social tools make it easier than ever to find people to the shows, movies and music that you want to see, and communities around content that ultimately that will enhance your overall experience,” said Volpi.

Joost also a new magazine program, its 46,000 videos divided into three categories – entertainment, music and film – said it would be easier for users to find what you’re looking for.

Joost was developed by the founders of Skype, the popular Internet telephony service that allows users to make free calls over the Web.

Shortly after its beta launch in January 2007, Joost announced a partnership with Viacom, YouTube has more than 100,000 unauthorized clips of Viacom television programs from the popular video sharing website.

Just goes to show, you gotta be on your toes to survive in the internet tv market and making viewers download software to watch is a BIG no no..
