Jersey Shore Goes Italian For Series Four

MTV have confirmed that there will be a fourth season of its hit reality series Jersey Shore, and have added that the cast will be filming in Italy, with the storyline of taking the egotistical cast back to their roots.

A promotional statement the network reads: “America’s most talked about housemates are leaving the boardwalk behind for the piazzas of Italy. Poised to get their G.T.L. on abroad, ready to drop in on Vinny’s family for a famous Guadagnino dinner and excited to trade gorillas for Italian stallions, this wacky and dysfunctional family is about to turn “the beautiful country upside down.”

MTV manages to film 2 ‘cycles’ of Jersey Shore each year, with one in the summer in the original setting of New Jersey, and another in a different location during winter in a generally warmer locale, where the cast show off their groomed and tanned bodies. Their previous excursion was to Florida, but this new series will be the first time that the 8 young Italian-American party-goers head overseas.

Chris Linn, EVP of Programming at MTV, says of this move ”While the stateside Jersey Shore locales have become iconic for our audience it’s really the constantly evolving dynamic amongst the cast that keeps them coming back each season and Europe is a fresh spin on a show that continues to reach new heights for us. The cast is headed to the birthplace of the culture they love and live by. We can’t wait to see what erupts as a result.”

Since its launch in 2009, Jersey Shoreis MTV’s best-rated series of all time with regards to their 12-34 demographic viewing figures, and currently (in series 3), has an average audience share of 8.3% in this group, airing at 10pm on Thursday nights. An episode last week also saw 8.9 million viewers, an MTV audience record. The series was originally created by Anthony Beltempo.

The show, which has gained a cult following from some viewers (and has been spoofed and derided in many other outlets) and created celebrities out of the actors, whose self-styled nicknames include ‘The Situation’, ‘Snookie’, ‘Pauly D’, and ‘J-Woww’, has also spawned several proposed remakes of the format (reality series following young locals as they live and party) both in America, and in other countries, on a variety of networks with shows such as Lake Shore (Toronto, Canada), K-Town (Korea Town (LA), USA), Wicked Summer (Irish-Americans in Boston, USA), and in the UK, MTV are looking to produce Geordie Shore (Newcastle, England). How long will the global craze for ‘reality’ TV last?
