James Cameron Advises You Wait Before Buying A 3D Television

Its the latest buzzword in tv systems, 3D is the new thing that will make your eyes literally ‘pop out’. But before you go out and buy the latest 3d tv set, listen to the wise words from Avatar director James Cameron.

In an interview with USA Today, he said:- “We’ve demonstrated that the 3D market is an extremely lucrative market and this is not a fad, this is not something that is going to go away. It’s going to be interesting because 3D TV’s are going to change things yet again. But the TVs are going to take awhile to catch up with the marketplace because there isn’t enough content.”

3D TV too little, too early

The new 3d television hardware is coming from top manufacturers – Sony, Samsung,LG and Panasonic, the sets will carry a hefty price tag of around $2000 plus for the tv and $100 per pair of 3d glasses. Cameron thinks people will buy the sets “because they’re future-proofing, if they’re going to buy a 55- or 65-inch monitor they want to make a decision that they’re going to feel good about three or four years from now. But right now we’ve got a content gap.”

He said that users will soon watch the handful of movies available but then have not much content, because new movies will take a long time to produce in 3D. Instead, he argues, users will probably be watching a lot of live 3D television instead. From sports games to live shows as live 3D TV is not expensive to produce. “Figure the cost of a production, whether a sporting event or music event, the incremental cost of shooting in 3D versus 2D is almost lost in the noise of that budget,” Cameron said.

It seems that the world isnt quite yet ready for 3d tv, a better bet would be to buy an internet connected television which has plenty of content now. Similar to when HDTV was first released, it may be better to wait for the content to arrive and the prices to fall.

  3. It almost sounds like good advise, but at this point I’d disagree for those who need to buy a dying set. If you are going out to shop and everything is turning 3d, you might as well buy a 3d set since they don’t cost a dime more. In fact many sets have 3d built in for free now anyway. A better idea might be for these people to get their 3d set and wait to buy the glasses and 3d blue ray player until next year. You can always watch 3d on your set in a year. But if you have no 3d set, then you can’t. Also there are ways to stream content without an internet ready tv. Finally there are some new TV’s coming in april that will have 3d + internet.

  4. “Sony, Samsung,LG and Panasonic, the sets will carry a hefty price tag of around $2000 plus for the tv”

This isn’t exactly true. If someone wants a 2d, dorm room, 32 inch cheapie, then yes a $2000 set seems expensive. But for those who wanted say a 72 inch big screen tv, the 3d is built in. Also the current price on a 73 inch TV with 3d built in is as cheap as about $1650. So it would be foolish to try to avoid getting the 3d that’s built in. In about another 2 months, getting a 3d set will be unavoidable anyway as they will all have the same chips etc.
