ITV Flix On Archive For Online Content Deal

While Netflix are obviously looking to make a good first impression when they expand into the UK & Ireland early next year, they will not be able to do it without some big-name content. For this purpose, the American online streaming and movie rental giant has already sealed a content deal with movie production company MGM, and they are now looking to follow suit with terrestrial broadcast network ITV.

The broadcaster, best known for their ITV1 channel, are said to be holding ’advanced talks’ with Netflix over a potential deal which would see the online streaming service allowed to host content from the network’s archive, although any move Netflix make is said to include a 30-day restriction window, as ITV’s own on-demand online catch-up service (ITV Player) will want to hold the exclusive rights to new programming during that period.

An outside source said of the plans: “For Netflix a deal would mean a huge marketing partner to help its UK ambitions and for ITV it fits with their strategy of building pay revenue.”

Netflix are currently looking to sign as many high-profile content deals as possible, as they look to break into an online TV market in the British Isles which already contains global online video service YouTube, LoveFilm (a service similar to Netflix run by Amazon), satellite broadcaster Sky.

It is believed that Netflix are currently in negotiations with another network, Channel 4, for a similar deal, with movie studios Momentum Pictures and Lionsgate also being touted for arrangements in the manner of the one with MGM. With a number of big names lined up, will Netflix get off to a positive start in Europe, or will their current self-inflicted problems at home follow them abroad?
