Is Comcast Buying NBC For $35 Billion?
Whilst everyone waits to see the outcome of the Comcast buying NBC possibility, what would that mean for online tv viewers especially Hulu?
Comcast have ststed its just a rumor and said in a statement:- “While we do not normally comment on M&A rumors, the report that Comcast has a deal to purchase NBC Universal is inaccurate.” NBC Universal has no comment.
However when looking at the facts, Comcast has plenty of cash swilling around and could borrow more if needed. They have also shown an interest in branching out into content before. In 2004, it made a run at Disney. Comcast is also one of the few potential buyers that could swallow up all of NBCU. While there might be lots of people interested in the different NBCU cable properties – USA, Bravo, SciFi etc.
And whilst Universal’s movie library is potentially attractive to some buyers, many of them such as Time Warner would have no interest in the film studio because they already have their own.
NBC is one of the founding partners of Hulu, the free internet TV portal is not liked by Comcast and other cable networks who think the site is undermining the value of the TV programming they spend big money on. And Comcast and Time Warner have been trying out a TV Everywhere strategy that is strangely enough down to Hulus massive success.
The sceptics amongst us would presume that if the deal were to go ahead, Hulu could see a drastic reduction in premium content thats free. If they control the NBC content then they call the free to watch shots and making Hulu less attractive whilst making their own very attractive may well solve the problem, for now.
