IPTV is expanding across the globe, at the end of 2009 the number of homes that receive IPTV services was 26 million. That number is expected to reach 70 million worldwide by the end of 2014 says a new report.

The report published by Informa Telecoms & Media who publish IPTV News, says that Revenue from IPTV will rise accordingly from $ 4.6bn in 2009 to US$ 12.2bn in 2014 although only 5% of the world’s TV households are expected to subscribe to IPTV platforms by the year 2014. Only a relatively small number of countries (13) will have IPTV subscribers of more than 1 million due to the difficulties in migrating viewers from well established cable services.

A large proportion of the future growth of the platform is expected to happen in Asia which is expected to become the largest region in terms of IPTV subscribers by 2011, and contribute 28 million of the 70 million worldwide subscribers forecast by the end of 2014.  China is expected to become the leading country, with 13.7 million subscribers, while Japan will be fourth with 5.4mn, and South Korea will rank sixth with 2.9 million.

As a consequence the US will drop from its lofty top position, France is expected to remain top of Europe’s IPTV market, but growth is expected to slow in the coming years as IPTV has concentrated in urban areas, and the country will rise from an existing 4.8 million IPTV residents to an estimated 5.8 million by 2014.

Hong Kong is expected to remain the top country for IPTV penetration of TV households by 2014, thanks largely to the inroads made by market leader PCCW, which has enjoyed rapid take-up thanks to its strategy of offering à la carte channel options and monthly (rather than annual) contracts.  By the end of 2014, 41% of Hong Kong’s TV households are expected to receive IPTV content.
