It is further proof that pretty soon televisions connected to the internet will boom around the world. You can already access the iPlayer catch up tv service using game consoles such as the Wii and PS3, and of course via the iphone.

A couple of months back, high street giant Marks and Spencer started selling the the iViewer TV manufactured by Cello Electronics which was an internet connected tv offering iPlayer viewing as standard.

The BBC Director of Future Media and Technology, Erik Huggers commented:- “BBC iPlayer has enjoyed huge success since launch two years ago, and the next challenge for us is taking the service mobile and into the living room; we’ve built a version of BBC iPlayer that can be easily adapted to work on internet-connected TVs.”

The iPlayer will be just a single application out of hundreds that will be available on connected TV’s, set-top boxes and Blu-ray players. Downloading the apps will be similar to doing so on an iPhone. Some will be free of charge and a majority available at a minimal cost.
