Internet TV Paying Off For Blinkx
Blinkx, the online video search engine and tv aggregator has had a busy year, and a profitable one. Although the video site has always been popular, it was not able to translate that into profit, until now.
The company have moved from a $8.91 million loss last year, to a pretax profit of $6.14 million for the year ending March 31st. The move comes as the service gained adverting revenue due to their expanding audience and expanding range of services onto connected devices. Revenue for the year was nearly double at $66.1 million.
Blinkx have been making a series of aquisitions to enhance their presence in the internet TV area. They recently brought web advertiser network Burst Media, in a bid to better monetize it’s inventory using Burst’s network of over 157 million unique users.
They also launched the blinkx Internet TV API and mobile API for Android and Apple devices., and new distribution agreements with Boxee, Google TV, Amino and Woomi. The changes have seen the number streams grow by approx 250% during the year.
Speaking for Blinkx, Suranga Chandratillake, founder and CEO said:- “We’re delighted to report another strong performance this year delivering results ahead of analyst consensus on all key metrics. We have maintained powerful momentum in the business, with revenue increasing over 96% on the prior year and a movement into a position of full year profitability with robust cash flow.
He continued:- “This achievement was driven by a number of factors, including the robust growth of traffic on the blinkx site and the ongoing success of our advertising platform, AdHoc, in attracting new and repeat advertising customers such as Kleenex and Microsoft. During the year we also continued to expand our cross-platform distribution initiatives, through partnering with industry leaders like Samsung, the launch of blinkx mobile and the release of our Application Programming Interface for the Internet TV space.”
Blinkx, which is based in Cambridge, where its technology was developed at the university, and San Francisco, pointed to strong advertising revenues from the likes of tissue group Kleenex and operating system group Microsoft.
