Internet tv and video on demand more popular on games consoles than PC’s
The big corporations keep pushing and promoting their internet tv systems. Microsoft and Apple have Media players and Apple TV’s. They predict and hope that consumers will ditch the TV and watch their PC all day but.. According to a recent study by Park Associates the uptake is slow. Apparently a paltry 1.5 million broadband connected houses have the PC hooked up to the main TV. “It may just be that consumers don’t want another box in the living room,”. Of course if you already have a PC next to or near your TV its no problem, but many people do not.
However an interesting aside is that movies and TV content is becoming ever more popular being sent via the new gen video games consoles. This shows that consumers want everything out of a single box and do not want to add more.
However one success has been Netflix the popular mail order dvd rental company has reporting great success getting into viewers living rooms using its service “Watch Instantly” which provides video on demand to your PC without the need for mailing. Netflix recently increased its online rental library to 6,000 movies and TV shows which are offered free to existing Netflix subscribers.

Netflix is looking for strategic partners that are already in possesion of a big chunk of the target market such as Microsoft and its Xbox 360 games console. The console would just need a simple software update which could be downloaded quickly to install the Netflix Watch Instantly software.
The ultimate aim is to get Netflix software platform onto as many boxes as it can and the over 23 million next gen game console users and set top box users are within their sites.
Gaming blogs have reported this pending videogame TV assault since last October when Netflix surveyed its subscriber list asking whether they would watch streaming movie content on the Xbox 360.
Xbox Live which has over 10 million online users already provides 5,000 hours of movie and TV shows content via the Video Marketplace. And over 30% of its US based xbox live clients have used the internet tv service.
A tie up makes sense as Netflix should complement the console makers content with their own vast TV and movie content which is expected to be offered free to subscribers.
Sony games is also planning to launch a similar movie and TV download via the PlayStation consoles which its planning to launch this year on its virtual world community.
Of course the convergeance of games consoles, set top boxes and PC’s will eventually produce a single unit for consumers..But when?
