3 Billion People To Use Internet By 2015 Driven By Connected Devices
Use of the internet around the world has been predicted to grow massively by 2015, partly thanks to connected devices such as iPad, says a new study.
“The explosive growth in internet data traffic, especially video, creates an opportunity in the years ahead for optimising and monetising visual, virtual and mobile internet experiences,” said Cisco vice president Suraj Shetty today.
The study compiled by Cisco Systems predicts that there will be 15 billion network connections by 2015, up from the current seven billion. That equates to around three billion people, or 40% of expected world population.
The growth will be felt strongest in Asia, which will hit 5.8 billion connections by 2015, North America will have 2.2 billion.
It will be the rise of the connected devices as the number of tablets, laptops and smartphones outnumbers the population by two to one around the globe. Tablet computers such as the iPad or its competitors are a significant force.
Speaking for Cisco, Suraj Shetty, vice president of marketing said:- “Six percent of Internet traffic by 2015 will be generated by one device-the tablet, that 6% represents more traffic than all the Internet usage in 2006.” he said. From a device wthat did’nt exist a year ago.
Computers will see a fall in use. Last year 97% of consumer internet traffic was from the PC, that will be 87% over the next four years as users move to tablets, smartphones and connected TV.
