Intel bringing Internet to a TV near you

intel tv Intel bringing Internet to a TV near youIn an unusual move – Intel is planning to develop devices that will let software applications run on your TV set showing you information from the Internet on your TV set. The devices including built in Television sets and seperate set top boxes are due to be revealed at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January 2009.

The so called widgets let viewers to chat with friends, find out more information on the show or movie they are viewing or purchase products advertised from online retail outlets.

Intel have combined with Yahoo to develop the ‘Widget Channel’, a hardware and software platform which will combine television and the Internet. Although no products are yet available, developers can obtain a software app to create TV applications. Combining Javascript, XML, HTML and Flash to develop software to be run on Intel’s x86 based chips in set top boxes and other devices.

Intel plans to develop partnerships with other content and service providers for the Widget Channel. Although TV sets have had a level of user integration before using game consoles or remotes they have been in the main unsuccessful.

Broadband companies are attempting interactivity using their IPTV networks for example letting users do basic computer stuff like upload and share photos across their IPTV network and letting users order movie and pizza at the same time. Wow.

The reasoning behind this development has been that a TV set is much easier to use compared to a PC and users/PC phobics would prefer using their tv to access the Internet. However that in my opinion will not work. Most under 40′s are pretty well versed in using a PC and because you can do all that intel plan on a PC using internet TV, this experiment may end up pretty unsuccessful.
