Inbuilt Internet TV the big thing for 2009?
Internet TV built into your new HDTV flat screen looks to be the big thing for the coming year. The big Blu Ray versus HD DVD battle looks like its gonna be small change compared to the new inbuilt online tv battle raging between manufacturers. All the big boys in HDTV including Samsung and Toshiba believe that this is going to be much bigger. Samsung’s Executive Vice President has even called it the ‘future of TV’.
Maybe the future involves us grabbing the TV remote instead of the keyboard and mouse when we want to browse the net.
The new dawn of TV involves us downloading movies, browsing eBay and chatting with pals on yahoo chat or MSN. While at the same time and on the same screen watching your TV show or movie.
Toshiba and Samsung are two of the latest HD TV manufacturers showing Internet connected TV’s at the CES in Las Vegas. Both have flat screens with Intel’s CE chip embedded, allowing the TV to run Yahoo’s “Widget Channel†software applications.
The new TV’s will connect to the web through your Ethernet or via an optional WiFi USB dongle. Toshiba says that it will have Internet connected TV’s available in the second half of 2009, though only for the US at first.
Also interesting is Samsung and Toshiba’s pledge of support for Windows Media Extender, an interesting idea which could in theory give TV sets the ability to stream music and videos from your laptop without the need of any additional hardware.
Is this the future of watching TV?
This idea has been tried unsuccessfully before by Microsoft and others with Media Center PC’s. However this idea is much more slick. Yahoo’s Widget Channel overlays The movie or show your watching with menus and widgets. Anything from an eBay widget to watch your auctions, news items, stock checkers or your Facebook/Myspace page.
With almost daily announcements of internet TV embedded TV sets. You better believe it’s going to be huge.
