With the advent of the new HTML5 video player and the lack of flash support on iPad and Iphone, many thought Hulu would move video players. However that is not the case, speaking On the Hulu blog, Eugene Wei, Hulu’s VP of product said that Hulu is sticking with Flash – for now.

He posted:- “We continue to monitor developments on HTML5, but as of now it doesn’t yet meet all of our customers’ needs,” Wei said. “Our player doesn’t just simply stream video, it must also secure the content, handle reporting for our advertisers, render the video using a high performance codec to ensure premium visual quality, communicate back with the server to determine how long to buffer and what bitrate to stream, and dozens of other things that aren’t necessarily visible to the end user. Not all video sites have these needs, but for our business these are all important and often contractual requirements.”

Hulu have released an updated video player, but could not resist putting the HTML5 rumors to bed. There have been many reports recently that Hulu are about to launch its online catch up tv service on Apple’s iphone and iPad devices. However, a spat between Apple and Adobe means that Flash is not coming to Apple phones anytime soon, and with Hulu killing the hope of them using HTML5, the conclusion can only be that Hulu is not coming to Apple products either.

The news has caught everyone off guard as CBS use a HTML5 player on iPad and Youtube has also been developing a HTML5 player. The new Flash player launched by Hulu has several improvments including a 25% bigger screen with on-screen controls. It also has adaptive bitrate streaming, adjusting the stream quality based on your connection speed and meaning less buffering times.

But dont give up on seeing Hulu on Apple products, anyone bet against a Hulu app being released soon?
