After launching in a fanfare, the new Hulu Plus subscription service caused ripples of excitement. However, looking at the bones of the deal shows that most of those tv streams can be seen for free.

A study by research company One Touch Intelligence shows that a massive 88% of  TV episodes available from the $10/month Hulu Plus can be seen freely. Looking at the 28,000+ episodes on Hulu Plus, just 3,345 of them cannot be viewed from Hulu. However two thirds of those extra episodes come from from prime time schedules of the broadcast TV networks associated with Hulu’s owners ABC, NBC and FOX.

Although Hulu Plus is still a young startup, the $10 monthly fee may look a little over the top when looking at the stats. It also doesnt help that Hulu Plus subscribers have to endure the same number of ads as free Hulu viewers.

As a further blow to Hulu, pretty much all the Hulu Plus content can be viewed on Netflix, and considering they have over 15 million subscribers, many will also be Hulu Plus subscribers too. Whether they realise that they can watch the streams on the existing Netlix package is up for debate. Then we have Apple and the rumored 99-cent tv show rentals, which for the casual viewer represents much better value than a monthly fee.

From other directions come the cable companies jumping into online streaming, plus the raft of new internet connected tv and hardware. Although it is still a young concept, Hulu Plus has some serious competition from some big players. Hulu is rumored to be going public this year so may need answers for potential buyers.
