Hulu Clone In The Pipeline From German TV Networks
The European TV broadcasters RTL, Pro 7, Sat 1 and Media AG are currently working on a German online TV platform with similar functionality as Hulu. The site will offer users free, but with ad supported access to TV shows and movies for up to seven days after they air on TV. The broadcasters will be submitting their plans for the platform to the European Commission in the hope get the go ahead from Europe’s competition watchdogs, according to the report.
The Financial Times have reported that the site will be open to competing broadcasters from Germany and Austria, There will also be room to include the public broadcasters like German public TV heavyweight ARD. The site seems to lean quite a lot to Hulu, and a source quoted by the paper said that “its aim was to aid participating networks in their competition with international Internet platforms”.
However, there will be one notable difference from Hulu: RTL, Pro 7 and Sat 1 will only supply the technical infrastructure, but the networks will still have to sell their own ads. This type of set up is to avoid regulatory issues.
Hulu has been wanting to expand internationaly for a while now, but The Telegraph reported back in April that Hulu was ready to abandon its planned expansion into the UK. because The local broadcaster ITV decided not to provide any of its content to Hulu.
