Hulu To Change Business Model In The Fight For Paying Viewers

Hulu restructure or get killed by Netflix

Hulu is in a crisis situation at this time and is looking to restructure in order to survive. According to The Wall Street Journal the online tv company is looking to change its current model from a catch up tv service to include streaming live TV and tv-on-demand to paying subscribers.

The proposed makeover would see them become like an online cable or satellite broadcaster and comes shortly after the confirmed Comcast buyout of NBC. It seems that the content providers for Hulu namely Disney, NBC and News Corp. are becoming dissillusioned with the free online tv model and are looking to pull more content and syndicate to other paying online companies such as Netflix.

Hulu are looking for better ways to create revenue and stop the content providers jumping ship. Insiders are saying that Disney and News Corp may take away the currently free Fox and ABC streams from Hulu as they get a better return from Apple, Netflix and even Microsoft.

As a reposte, Hulu may restructure as a cable network on the net and offering a range of subscription plans. It is not known what will happen to the existing free Hulu, although we imagine the 7 day free catch up model would remain. They may also show premium content to subscribers first and wait a week or two before allowing free streaming.

The powers that be also see Hulu Plus not achieving the success that was hoped for, the $7.99/month subscription service lets users watch full season TV shows but does not have the appeal of a Netflix service or buying digitally via Apple. To make matters worse, Netflix also shows a lot of the same content but with lots more on top. It gets worse when looking at connected tv hardware, Netflix is on everything whilst Hulu is available on a selected number of devices. And it is known that viewers prefer to watch streaming tv on the big screen rather than the pc or phone.

Hulu are also watching rival Netflix doing deals with a whole host of content providers and pushing their stream only service. Before it is too late Hulu needs to shake things up, otherwise the golden boy of streaming tv will become a washed up has been.
