Hulu Looking To Broadcast Streams Straight To Your Television Set
When Apple announced its new iPad, the biggest howls of derision centred around the fact that it had no flash integration which equalled no Hulu. But then rumors abound that Hulu would be available on the new touch screen device, and that leads to the possibility of Hulu playing on your big screen TV as well.
Hulu is insanely popular in the online world, but how many people get to watch it on the big screen? Well not many, unless your happy to change your pc settings, get in some cables, put your pc in front of the tv etc. Nobody except techno geeks bother.
When you look at how many devices are now Netflix enabled with its Watch Instantly client, you can see where the market is going. Watching television and movies on your pc may tempt subscribers, but the big screen experience will drag em in screaming.
And now according to MediaMemo, Hulu is looking to get in on some big screen action and tempt paying customers with a “three screen” premium service. The catch up tv giant, owned in part by TV networks ABC, Fox and NBC, has been searching for a way to convince users to pay for the service. They so far havent had much luck, but the iPad could change all that.
The three screen system concept means that the viewer could watch streams on pc like they do now free of charge, but watching streams on a mobile device or big screen television would require paying for. The concept seems kind of acceptable with the only problem being that Hulu needs a way to get its streams to your television. The Netflix method of having the streaming capability built into every set-top box, games console and Blu-ray player is the only way to achieve this.
So Hulu will need to convince manufacturers of these devices to install their software and convince users to use it. Netflix charge low fees whilst tv companies charge high. However if Hulu can get the pricing right, then you may be able to swith from watching on your iPad across to your 50″ hd tv with ease.
