Warner Bros Make Customers Wait Longer For Redbox And Netflix Cheap DVD

In a bid to boost flagging DVD sales, Warner Bros are making customers of cheap DVD rental companies such as Redbox and Netflix wait a massive eight weeks before they can rent them out.

Can you wait 8 weeks or will you buy?

This means you have a choice to buy the movie from retail stores such as Wal-Mart or Best Buy, or wait for double the existing time of 28 days after movies are on sale before they can be rented.

The 56 day, or 8 week wait has been agreed by Netflix say sources, but Redbox and Blockbuster are said to be sticking to the 28 day agreement and not the longer wait. The companies will not be able to purchase discs from Warner Bros. if they do not agree to the deal, they will have to buy them direct from retail stores at a higher price.

The eight week wait is expected to be adopted by other movie studios and is a response to the massive fall in dvd sales in the US.

In the last seven years,  sales of dvd and Blu-ray discs have dropped a third ($10.3 billion to $7 billion). And it seems that Netflix and Redbox are getting the blame, as their policy of unlimited DVD rentals for a flat monthly fee discourages buying.

The move probably explains why Netflix are trying to distance themselves from DVD rental and concentrate on streaming only. But when many are predicting the demise of the dvd, is this a great decision to make?
