High Definition or (HDTV) is becoming ever more popular not just offline, but online as well. Our HDTV listings are now the third most popular category so watching high definition online is a growing fad. So what is it and how did HD originate?

High definition is a term that refers to the higher quality version of display used in TV shows, Films, and Video Games, among other things. The term is constantly associated with the picture quality (it can be up to 6 times higher quality than standard definition) only, although it also includes the increased quality of sound.

The commercial use of high definition has really shot to prominence within the last few years, but has really been a developing presentation method since the 1940’s. The late 1990’s were the first uses for wider broadcasts. HD is basically the use of a greater number of pixels, with the widest application (for TV use) being a 1920×1080 resolution.

Due to the growth of HD technology, there is obviously a great amount of systems that it can be used on. As mentioned earlier, the main applications of the system would be TV, Movies (including Cinema), Video Game Systems (PS3 & Xbox 360), and Computers (including a mixture of the previous ones).

There are several methods used to display HD imagery on TV screens, with several TV channels recently launching an HD version of their services. Such channels include NBC, CBS, BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Sky Sports among the more notable ones, with many more having launched or preparing to in coming months and years, mainly available through channel bundle packages such as Satellite and cable. DVDs in HD are now also big business for players and discs alike, with Blu-Ray the sole contributor to the disc market after rivals HD-DVD pulled out thanks to a lack of sales.

An increase in accessibility has led to further popularity, as everyone looks to have something in High Definition as part of the latest craze. This is helped by the fact that HD-Ready TV sets are now available from a mere $200. Some inputs may also match this in terms of value for money, and only add to the enjoyment of the experience. The clearer image quality is also a big attraction, sometimes being described as close to or matching the image quality of being at the scene.

Overall, it is this picture quality that helps to make HD TV so popular, but the range of applications for it and the ever-developing concept of this technology will ensure that it maintains and increases its demand for some time yet.
